Scottish Firearms Offences Fall By A Third

The number of firearms offences recorded in Scotland fell by a third in the past year, according to Scottish government statistics.
Police recorded a total of 365 offences in which a firearm was alleged to have been involved in 2012-13.
This was a drop of 32% from the 535 recorded in the previous year.
The number of offences in which a firearm was discharged and either killed or injured someone fell from 95 to 66.

Two Men Convicted Over Illegal Guns Bound for Scotland

Two men have been convicted of being involved in a plot to buy guns and ammunition destined for Scotland.
The £3,500 consignment was discovered after being abandoned at Carlisle railway station in August last year.
During a trial at Liverpool Crown Court, Barry Kelly and Craig Colquhoun denied trying to buy the stash.
Two other men who supplied the weapons, William Dempsey, a serving soldier, and Martin Ashdown, pleaded guilty to firearm offences.

The investigation into the deaths of two men in a farm shooting should centre on how the killer was able to obtain a firearms licence, the local MP has said.
Robert McCormick, 53, is said to have gunned down 59-year-old Peter Thompson and injured his fleeing son John, 36, shooting him in the leg.

Domestic Abusers Facing Gun Ban in UK

People with a history of domestic violence should be prevented from having guns, says the Home Office.
Police in England, Wales and Scotland should review a person's suitability to keep firearms after every domestic violence incident, ministers say.

Majority of Scottish People Oppose New Airgun Licence Plan

An overwhelming majority of those who responded to a Scottish government consultation on licensing air weapons oppose the plan.
Under the proposed new scheme, anyone wanting to own an air gun would need to demonstrate they had a legitimate reason for doing so.
A total 87% of respondents rejected the idea - with some describing it as "draconian" and "heavy-handed".

Scotland has fewer people with firearm licences but they own more guns, the latest statistics have shown.
By the end of last year, 141,569 shotguns were held on certificate along with 72,005 firearms. Those figures represented a 10-year high.
The number of licences issued by the end of 2012 was 48,168, which represented a 10-year low.

Adam Hepburn, 22, was in his Land Rover with another man when a rifle went off.

A man who was caught with firearms and drugs at his home in North Lanarkshire has been jailed for seven years.
Police raided 50-year-old John Lucas' isolated home at Roughrigg, Airdrie, on April 27 last year.

The number of offences in Scotland involving firearms has more than halved since 2006-07, according to official figures.
Scotland's police forces recorded 514 incidents in 2011-12, a 21% fall on the previous year and a fall of more than 50% on 2006-07.
