More than 1000 people have had a firearms safety lecture and test - as part of a programme mostly designed for Maori. The two-year-old scheme called Whakatupato is run by the Mountain Safety Council in rural areas. It was set up after a 2005 survey showed about half of the gun users in Te Urewera didn't have a firearms licence, which means they weren't being told about the potential dangers. An investigation into an international weapons smuggling operation has led police to raid an Ontario army base and lay more than 30 charges against a Quebec soldier. Ontario provincial police say the raids conducted at CFB Borden and several locations in Quebec netted hundreds of firearms, gun enhancements and parts, including silencers and thousands of rounds of ammunition. The number of people affected by serious youth violence fell by 30% with 1,900 fewer victims over the past financial year, according to the Met. Overall, recorded crime in London fell by about 6% with 45,000 fewer reports between 2012-13.
