A man has gone on trial accused of possessing illegal guns at a luxury West Wales hotel. Steven Pearce, 44, was arrested by police in December 2011 while travelling in a Bentley convertible near Cross Hands. He is now on trial at Swansea Crown Court after denying possession of two guns without proper authority, a 9mm semi-automatic Walther P1 pistol and a 9mm Tula Tokarev pistol. US prosecutors have declined to release names and addresses of the witnesses and co-conspirators involved in a gun-running operation between south Florida and Grand Cayman after attorneys for one of the suspects in the case requested those records earlier this year. "The disclosure of the names and addresses of government witnesses is likely to endanger the safety of the witnesses and the viability of the prosecution," prosecutors noted in a 26 July court filing.... On the rainy summer's morning that I arrive at Bisley, a sprawling collection of colonial buildings and rifle ranges set in 3,000 acres of Surrey heathland, news is breaking about a policeman who has been shot dead in Essex. An unfortunate coincidence, this, given that I've come here not to write about gun crime but to meet some typical – that is to say, non-deranged – gun owners. In a clubhouse which has silver trophies in display cabinets and sepia photographs of... (GunPolicy.org)

Since the Supreme Court recognized an individual's right to keep and bear arms in 2008 — but declined to say which types of arms — several lower courts have had their say on whether Americans can own machine guns. The U.S. courts of appeals for the Third, Sixth and Eighth circuits have all said, in so many words, no right exists to have a machine gun. You can add the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to the list. In affirming the conviction of Alaskan... (GunPolicy.org)
