New regulations allowing security guards to carry high-calibre handguns and shotguns is a weakening of gun control that will see more firearms ending up in criminal hands, the NSW Greens say. The amendment to state firearms legislation, quietly introduced by the Labor government before Christmas, gives the NSW Police Commissioner the power to authorise security guards to carry prohibited firearms. This week the Greens MP Lee Rhiannon attempted to have the regulation... (GunPolicy.org)

IQALUIT, Nunavut — A Nunavut man convicted of killing an RCMP officer didn't utter a single word as a judge sentenced him to "a living death." The good news: Police took 30 guns off the streets. The bad: Some 50 more are still out there. This, after a "significant blow" was dealt to an alleged cross-border crime group that cooked up a specialty in moving legally bought guns from the United States to criminals in the Greater Toronto Area. "We are aware of approximately 80 guns that have come up from an individual in Kentucky," OPP Insp. Steve Clegg told reporters Thursday, a day after a joint-forces... (GunPolicy.org)

If you want to know how obsessed The New York Times is with gun control in Virginia, take a look at the Web version of its story on John Patrick Bedell, the ill-fated Pentagon shooter. In one of its first stories on the subject, the writers shoe-horned the gun control issue into it to no seeming purpose. Of course, the Times did have a purpose: slapping the backward yahoos down South. "Virginia, which has some of the most lax gun laws in the nation and has been... (GunPolicy.org)
