ASHLEY HALL — When police released the details of the alleged terrorism plot they foiled this week in Melbourne, they claimed that the would-be attackers were planning to use automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Long-barrelled semi-automatic weapons were outlawed by John Howard after the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 and there was a crackdown on semi-automatic handguns after the Monash University shooting seven years ago. Nonetheless, criminologists say there are... (GunPolicy.org)

The Senate confirmed Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court yesterday. Gun-control groups are crowing that the 68-31 vote was a major defeat for the National Rifle Association, which actively opposed the nomination. The gun controllers are reading too much into this vote. The NRA scored Judge Sotomayor's confirmation and ran ads to defeat her, but the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence counted eight NRA-endorsed senators who spurned the powerful gun-rights... South Carolina is one of America's weakest gun-law states fueling the "iron pipeline" of weapons elsewhere, the anti-gun violence Brady Center said Wednesday. Using federal data on the origins of guns recovered nationally in 2008, the Brady group said dealers in states with so-called "weak" gun laws supplied out-of-state guns at more than five times the rate that dealers in the states with "stronger" gun laws did. The results indicate South Carolina is not shedding... (GunPolicy.org)

MADISON, Wisconsin — An online weapons dealer who sold a gun or accessories to three mass killers, including a man who opened fire at a Pittsburgh-area health club this week, said Friday that any of the shooters could have just as easily found what they wanted at a Wal-Mart or another store. Eric Thompson, whose company TGSCOM Inc. last year sold an empty Glock 9 mm magazine and magazine loading apparatus to George Sodini, the man who shot up a Collier Township, Pa.,... (GunPolicy.org)

WASHINGTON — The attorney who got the Supreme Court to overturn the District of Columbia's handgun ban is now challenging rules that prohibit gun owners from carrying their weapons outside their homes. Attorney Alan Gura filed a lawsuit Thursday in federal court challenging the gun laws the city passed in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling. Those laws allow people to keep registered guns only at home for self-defense. Three of the plaintiffs in the case are... (GunPolicy.org)

CAMP TAJI, Iraq — Marines with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group (Forward), delivered roughly 900 captured enemy weapons to the Taji National Maintenance Depot aboard Camp Taji, Iraq, July 28, 2009. This was one in a series of transfers that have taken place since 2004 under an agreement requiring enemy weapons captured by the U.S. military to be turned over to the Iraqi government for future use by the Iraqi Army and Iraqi Police. "I actually look good. I dress good, am clean-shaven, bathe, touch of cologne — yet 30 million women rejected me," wrote George Sodini in a blog that he kept while preparing for this week's shooting in a Pennsylvania gym in which he killed three women, wounded nine others and then killed himself. We've seen this tragic ritual so often that it has the feel of a formula. A guy is filled with a seething rage toward women and has easy access to guns. The result: mass... (GunPolicy.org)
