DENVER — Sales of handguns, rifles and ammunition have surged in the last week, according to gun store owners around the nation who describe a wave of buyers concerned that an Obama administration will curtail their right to bear arms. "He's a gun-snatcher," said Jim Pruett, owner of Jim Pruett's Guns and Ammo in northwest Houston, which was packed with shoppers on Thursday. "He wants to take our guns from us and create a socialist society policed by his own police... (GunPolicy.org)

An unequivocal "no" from the state Attorney General's Office is often enough to shoot down a city proposal. Not so with a move by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels to ban legally permitted handguns from city-owned parks and buildings, an effort that, if successful, could shatter a 47-year-old state prohibition against cities' regulation of firearms. The Mayor's Office continues to build a case for the ban despite an Oct. 14 opinion issued by Attorney General Rob McKenna's... (GunPolicy.org)

Considering his history, Brian Borgelt could be forgiven if he didn't give gun control advocates — "anti-gun activists," in his words — the time of day. The former owner of Bull's Eye Shooting Supply, Borgelt came to be viewed by many as the quintessential irresponsible gun shop operator after an assault rifle from his store ended up in the hands of the Beltway Snipers. The Tacoma store, correctly or not, became a symbol of the nation's flawed gun control... (GunPolicy.org)

With her manicured nails, Prada heels and slim 5-foot 9-inch figure, Kelly Miller can hold her own at any cocktail party. But this week the mother of four swapped her chai lattes for a Winchester rifle, matched wits against the wilds of Northern Alberta — and caught a doe in the crosshairs for the first time. "I am really not sure who was more scared," she said in a text message from the bush. "Me or her." "Sex and the City meets cammo" is how the 31-year-old... (GunPolicy.org)

Private security contractor Blackwater Worldwide, often a target of congressional Democrats, soon may face new legal problems. A grand jury in Washington is expected to decide soon whether to indict individual Blackwater guards involved in a widely publicized shooting incident in Baghdad last year, two people familiar with the investigation said. And the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls, which is responsible for export controls on some arms, is... (GunPolicy.org)

CAIRO — Adel Abdel Maguid, 27, an accountant at an oil company, never imagined that he would ever need a gun to defend himself. What had started off as a vehement dispute with his landlord who wanted to evict him, gradually evolved into a potentially violent situation when, upon returning from work one day, he was warned by the gateman that four thugs were waiting at his flat to force him to sign a clearance document saying that he will voluntarily leave the...
