PITTSBURGH — With shackles around his ankles and tears in his eyes, Kwabena Baffoe-Bonnie told the U.S. District Court he had always resisted the "temptations that were always around" in the "pretty tough neighbourhood" in Rexdale where he grew up. "I can't give an explanation — one moment I lost sight of everything I've known my whole life," said the 25-year-old Toronto man, who was sentenced to 30 months in a U.S. federal prison yesterday after admitting he... At first blush, Leslie Scharien looked like any other cross-border shopper when he pulled into the Emerson border crossing Oct. 3, 2004. Scharien told border officers he had been in North Dakota to look at a used car that was for sale. He said he had not purchased anything and had received no gifts. But the address Scharien provided was different from the one on his driver's licence. He was told to pull ahead for a secondary inspection. Scharien's driver's licence... (GunPolicy.org)

In announcing his intention this week to seek a Supreme Court ruling upholding the District's strict gun laws, Mayor Adrian Fenty said, "The handgun ban has saved many lives and will continue to do so if it remains in effect." Can't argue with that. Gun control advocates tell us that a gun kept in the home is more likely to be used in an unintentional shooting or in an attempted or completed suicide than in self-defense. What's more, the combination of guns and domestic... (GunPolicy.org)

LONDON — Two separate shootings killed one person and wounded two others, including a teenager, in Manchester, a city known as "Gunchester" in the 1990s because of its widespread firearms crime. Friday nights attacks — the latest in a rash of recent shootings in Manchester — also came just two days after a 16-year-old boy was shot in south London by a gang who chased him on bicycles, police said. The violence is likely to re-ignite a national debate in Britain... (GunPolicy.org)

AK47: The Story of the People's Gun, by Michael Hodges, 226pp, Sceptre, £16.99 There was a hint, I thought, or wished, of a Russified Jack London in the childhood and adolescence of Mikhail Kalashnikov. The expanses of Siberia standing in for the Pacific north-west perhaps; there was an old rifle for hunting in the woods; the mysterious gift of an American Browning revolver, to be wondered at, taken apart and cherished; an artisan's fascination with mechanical things;... The District issued a report on guns and crime yesterday, indicating an increase in the proportion of offenses involving guns and offering figures on the relative prevalence of guns in neighborhoods. Titled the 2006 Annual Report on Guns in the District of Columbia and termed the first of its kind, it was released as the city prepares to challenge a court ruling that rejects one of its principal curbs on firearms. Also yesterday, officials from Maryland and the... (GunPolicy.org)

SANDUSKY, Ohio — Police said a man shot his girlfriend and then killed himself on a Lake Erie beach Friday after an officer tried to question the couple. Sandusky police say the officer approached the couple sitting near the shoreline about 10:30 p.m. because they were in Lions Park after it had closed. As the officer tried to talk to the couple, Larry Barnett Jr., 25, turned and shot his girlfriend, Rachelle Baskey, 24, in the head, then shot himself, according to... (GunPolicy.org)
