LONGWOOD, Florida — Family and friends mourning the loss of a troubled teenager prepared a candlelight vigil Sunday to remember the boy, who died two days after being shot by deputies at his middle school. Christopher Penley, 15, was officially pronounced dead at 4:57 a.m., the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said in a statement posted on its Web site. Park County SWAT team members cornered and shot an armed survivalist late Saturday who escaped into the woods Friday afternoon following a heated dispute about a late fee levied by the county. Roger Talbert, 48, eluded police until 7:15 p.m. Saturday, when SWAT team members found him in a Placer Valley subdivision home. When the officers entered the home, Talbert charged and tried to wrestle away one officer's gun, authorities said. "The suspect was shot and has... (GunPolicy.org)

Although homicides reported in New York City last year reached their lowest level since 1963, two killings of police officers late in the year raised public awareness of the problem of illegal guns on the city's streets. For Wilmington lawyer John J. Thompson, the question of whether Delaware should make it easier for law-abiding residents to get a permit to carry a concealed handgun is a simple one. "You ought to be able to defend your life and the life of your loved ones. I think that's a basic human right," said Thompson, who holds a concealed-carry permit and is president of the Delaware State Sportsmen's Association. For the Rev. Derrick Johnson, who works to bring peace to some... (GunPolicy.org)

Most of us wouldn't drive our cars without a spare tire or venture out in a Wisconsin snowstorm without a set of jumper cables and a few bags of cat litter in our vehicles. Responsible drivers don't drive one mile without car insurance. And most of us carry all sorts of life, casualty, health and other insurance. Yet the state of Wisconsin for more than 100 years has told respectable, law-abiding citizens that they just can't carry a concealed handgun. Gov. Jim... (GunPolicy.org)
