MONROVIA — The United Nations said on Wednesday nearly 1,800 former combatants reported for demobilisation during the first week of its relaunched disarmament programme in Liberia, but less than half of them handed in a gun. This revived fears that many of the weapons used in Liberia's 14-year civil war were being hidden or had been spirited away across the border into neighbouring countries. Officials of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) told reporters... (GunPolicy.org)

When Alvin Starks was arrested last month for threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend and violating a court protection order, police should have seized his Kel Tec 9 mm pistol. They didn't. Authorities now say Starks, 30, used that gun to kill Andrea Umphrey on Sunday after abducting her and their 9-month-old daughter and leading police on a 50-mile car chase. State police yesterday charged Starks with a dozen crimes in connection with the abduction and said they plan... (GunPolicy.org)

The allegations were made in the County Court yesterday as prosecutors applied to tighten bail conditions for the policeman, who... (GunPolicy.org)
