What started as a BB of trouble has turned into a cannonball of a controversy for Alpharetta. A proposal to prohibit most unsupervised use of BB guns, paintball guns and similar devices by minors has split the City Council and drawn the attention of the National Rifle Association's Washington headquarters. Councilman Jim Matoney's proposal, up for a final vote tonight, even earned the city some unwanted national attention from Libertarian talk show host Neal Boortz,... (GunPolicy.org)

Most adults believe children should be taught to shoot as a healthier pursuit than playing violent computer games or watching adult films. The findings come in a survey for the Countryside Alliance. It found that 77% think teaching youngsters how to handle guns in real life situations is preferable to virtual violence. The pro-foxhunting Alliance says there are many misconceptions surrounding firearms but children have for years been taught how to use them... (GunPolicy.org)

LITTLETON, Colorado — Three bullets cut Daniel Rohrbough's life short during the Columbine High School massacre. One hit his leg, another his stomach and the third pierced his chest. Yet almost three years after the April 1999 assault, the Rohrbough family still isn't sure who fired that third and fatal bullet — the teen-age gunmen or a police officer. "You don't have closure. You'll always have this hole in your heart, you'll always have the loneliness and... (GunPolicy.org)

PHOENIX, Arizona — A ban on recreational shooting in Arizona's Tonto National Forest has drawn praise from forest officials, but many residents who live near forest boundaries feel the restrictions don't go far enough. They want to ban hunters as well as those who shoot for fun. In August, about 80,000 of Tonto's 2.9 million acres were closed to recreational shooters. The restricted area includes the Cave Creek and Mesa Ranger districts near residential developments... (GunPolicy.org)

The Interlake Sporting Association will have to get better control of its shooting range before the county allows the club to reopen. The King County Sheriff's Office recently concluded that Interlake should change the way it oversees shooters before it gets its license back. Interlake, located at 13633 N.E. 97th St., has been closed since September, when an errant bullet left the range and landed about 3 feet from an employee at a nearby business. The Sheriff's... Nearly a year ago, a group of gun-violence-prevention activists from five New England states met for the first time in Boston to talk about issues of common interest. When the day was done, participants spoke of their hopes for continuing the regional gatherings. Best intentions often fail to materialize, of course, but the dedication of the New England group has proven to be the real thing. On Jan. 24, activists representing a dozen organizations gathered in Boston... (GunPolicy.org)

One recent Congressional report called Ohio a gun-runner's paradise. The reasons are this: Ohio requires no permit to carry a weapon; it has no limits on the number of guns an individual can buy; and, unlike Pennsylvania, Ohio has failed to close the "gun show loophole." The following is a transcript of WTAE Team 4 reporter Jim Parsons' report that aired Feb. 1, 2002. It's an easy buy at this Ohio gun show. No questions were asked by a guy trying to sell me a...
