LANSING — Opponents of a new law that makes it easier to obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon in most Michigan communities are preparing a petition drive to block the law's implementation. Wayne County Prosecutor Michael Duggan, one of the organizers of People Who Care About Kids, said Tuesday the campaign to short-circuit the measure and place the question before voters will kick off within two weeks. The concealed-weapons bill, long sought by local and... (GunPolicy.org)

Law enforcement officials in Washtenaw and Livingston counties expect a dramatic rise in the number of area residents carrying concealed handguns, since Gov. John Engler signed a new concealed weapons law Tuesday. Currently, 489 Washtenaw County residents and a similar number of residents in Livingston County are among the approximately 52,000 Michigan residents who can legally carry a concealed handgun. EDMONTON — Yesterday, the day after Canada's newest gun law came into effect, gun owners tried to get rid of their now illegally held weapons and police struggled to cope with the new legislation. Wes Bellmore, a spokesman for the Edmonton Police Service, said more than 100 firearms were turned in and many police officers were confused about the legislation and their role in its enforcement. Instead, it will stage a gun safety teach-in and family fair at the nearby Johns Hopkins University's Montgomery County... (GunPolicy.org)

An acquaintance I call Second Amendment Sam telephoned the other day and predicted with a cowboy whoop that 2001 would be the Year of the Gun. Normally I would jump into his face with typical liberal hysteria and proclaim his stupidity and insensitivity and lack of historical vision, but not this time. Given our new gun-friendly, Texas-toned administration, the intellectual equivalent of being between presidents, Second Amendment Sam may be right. He is so sure he... (GunPolicy.org)

FARGO, North Dakota — Carey McWilliams has a concealed weapons permit from the state of North Dakota and isn't afraid to use a gun — even though he's blind. McWilliams, a 27-year-old North Dakota State University graduate student, says the permit, issued in September, is for protection. "If you choose this blind victim, you might end up dead," McWilliams said. "I don't want to shoot anybody, but an assailant's life is not an issue with me." McWilliams' sight is... (GunPolicy.org)

BUDAPEST — Jimmy Zambo, one of Hungary's best-selling pop stars, died yesterday in a freak gun accident. Zambo, 42, accidentally shot himself in the head at his home in a residential district of Budapest, the state news agency MTI reported. He was a keen hunter and owned several guns. Police said Zambo was with his wife and three friends, and they had been drinking when he fired his gun, a 9mm Beretta, out of the window. A police spokeswoman said the reason why he...
