WASHINGTON — People living in public housing are more than twice as likely to become victims of gun violence as the rest of the population, the Department of Housing and Urban Development said Wednesday. Although crime overall has dropped among the nation's2.6 million residents of public housing, they are victimized by people with guns at a rate of 10 per 1,000 residents. That compares with a rate of four per 1,000 for the rest of the population, HUD said. Crimes... (GunPolicy.org)

Two gun-control organizations in Colorado joined forces Wednesday to form the largest group dedicated to gun-violence prevention in the state. The Colorado Coalition Against Gun Violence and Sane Alternatives to the Firearms Epidemic have merged to form one organization that will represent more than 50,000 people. "We thought that we would be stronger if we worked closely together on the same front rather than if we were going off in separate directions," said Ted... (GunPolicy.org)

RICHMOND, Virginia — For all the political oratory and legislative proposals prompted by the Columbine High School shooting rampage, one of the few fast-moving firearms bills in the nation's statehouses this year is not a gun control measure. It is a ban promoted by the National Rifle Association against cities suing gun manufacturers for liability in deadly sprees by citizens. "It's one of our top priorities," said Jim Baker, the N.R.A.'s chief lobbyist, who... (GunPolicy.org)

No guns allowed on city buses, in parks, in municipal buildings-Arizona cities and counties have gone too far, many state lawmakers have decided. A proposal to strip local government's authority to enact gun laws has Arizona police chiefs, city leaders and some neighborhood activists nervous and upset. Critics say that House Bill 2095, which sailed through the House, effectively would undo everything on city law books, including zoning regulations that keep gun shops... (GunPolicy.org)

Naomi Post, wife of Mayor Street, was first on a list of people who were to appear with Allyson Schwartz at a news conference yesterday aimed at advancing Schwartz's campaign for the U.S. Senate. Post never showed up. But a dozen other dignitaries turned out to support a call from Schwartz, a Democratic state senator from Philadelphia, for stronger handgun control. The news conference was held shortly after noon on the windy, noisy sidewalk outside William Penn High... (GunPolicy.org)

A proposed Utah law permitting concealed handguns in schools — so long as the principal knows who's packing — has made odd bedfellows out of statewide PTAs and the local NRA chapter. Both object to the measure, but for opposite reasons. The PTA thinks any law allowing guns in schools is "outrageous"; the NRA wants the law unrestricted. Most Utah residents side with the PTA, and will try to settle the matter with a Nov. 7 referendum to ban all guns from... (GunPolicy.org)

WASHINGTON — Paralyzed by a cousin's accidental gunshot, 19-year-old Namel Norris spreads a simple message to America's youth from his wheelchair: "Guns are nothing to play with. Don't even pick them up." The aspiring music producer from New York City joined Andrew Cuomo, the secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and others Wednesday in rallying support for an agency campaign for stricter gun control measures. Also Wednesday, President... (GunPolicy.org)

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Presidential contender Bill Bradley fired a few rounds at Vice President Al Gore's gun control policies as he took the battle for the Democratic nomination to New England Thursday. At a community center in Dorchester, one of Boston's poorer neighborhoods where crime remains a presence and adolescents can get a gun more cheaply than a pair of sneakers, Bradley reiterated his gun proposals. He called for the registration and licensing of all... (GunPolicy.org)
