In 1975, members of the Woodstock Sportsmen's Club began shooting clay pigeons launched over the wetlands that mark the headwaters of the Kishwaukee River in central McHenry County. For the next 25 years, shotgun blasts showered lead pellets over a wide area. The City of Woodstock, which owns the site, evicted the club in 2000 to make room for a corridor of open space.
