How are guns classified in Canada? Three ways: Non-restricted, restricted and prohibited. Non-restricted guns are long-barreled rifles or shotguns that are typically used for hunting or shooting. A handgun or semi-automatic rifle is restricted but can still be obtained with a permit. A prohibited gun would be a fully automatic weapon but could also include a handgun or shotgun that has been altered to a different barrel size or to fire like an automatic weapon. I know...
