Thousands of assault rifles provided to Papua New Guinea's police and armed forces by Australia and the United States have been sold to criminals and tribal fighters, an audit has revealed. Philip Alpers, a specialist in the public health effects of gun-related violence and firearm regulation at Sydney University's school of public health, said guns and ammunition confiscated from criminals were routinely recirculated to crime gangs.
