When a corroded 9 mm handgun surfaced last year in a brushy West Seattle yard, police suspected it had been used nearby to kill a 14-year-old boy three years earlier. But they needed proof. Using the gun's serial number, they traced it through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to a man who had bought it from a licensed gun dealer.
