Regulation of Semi-automatic Assault Weapons
Definition and Selection Criteria

Legal restrictions on the civilian possession of semi-automatic ‘assault weapons,’ or military-style long guns designed to resemble fully automatic assault weapons.

Although ‘assault weapon’ and ‘assault rifle’ are now contentious terms often disowned by those who created them, both were originally coined by arms manufacturers and the military, then widely used by the gun industry world-wide to describe, popularise and sell civilian-legal variants of military weapons.

The US firearm industry now prefers to use the term ‘black rifle.’

Semi-automatic versions of assault rifles are also widely used by military and law enforcement personnel.
