Average Gun Ownership Levels by US State and Decade
Definition and Selection Criteria

In a given jurisdiction the number of firearms held by civilians could have risen, while in the same period the proportion of households containing firearms could have fallen, or vice versa.

Counting the proportion of households with firearms might reveal trends in which existing gun owners acquire more guns, while at the same time a decreasing proportion of households contain firearms.
