2010 Firearm Amnesty

The Minister of Police declared a firearm amnesty in 2010 in order to eradicate the illegal pool and criminal use of firearms in South Africa.

During this period a total of 11,887 illegal firearms and 129,234 illegal rounds of ammunition were handed to the South African Police Service.

During the same period 30,442 legal firearms and 321,155 legal rounds of ammunition were surrendered voluntarily to the South African Police Service.
