Number of Registered Firearms
In August 2011, the Central Firearms Registry (CFR) reported that approximately 2.9 million firearms were registered to just over 1.8 million civilians in South Africa. This is a reduction from 1994, when there were 3.5 million licensed firearms in the hands of 2.4 million individuals.
Editor's note: the precise figure is reported to be 1,845,032 according to Gun Free South Africa, who originally sourced this number from an affidavit from the Minister of Police.
