Private firearms transfers (i.e., transfers by non-firearms dealers) are not subject to a background check requirement in South Carolina.

South Carolina prohibits the furnishing of a firearm to:
- A juvenile committed to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice while on the institutional grounds of the Department;
- A patient or prisoner of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health ("SCDMH"); or
- A patient receiving inpatient services in a program under the jurisdiction of the SCDMH.
