Cook Island officials volunteered a figure of 500 registered guns, but also noted that a total of 1,944 firearms have been registered in the Cook Islands since 1950.
They calculate that 30 per cent of these are out of order, damaged, or destroyed.
Even so, this suggests that as many as 860 unregistered firearms could be in circulation in the Cook Islands.
If true, this would increase the national ratio from one firearm per 36 Cook Islanders to one for every 15.
