El análisis de las cifras registradas por el Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal y Ciencias Forenses, INMLCF, indica que después de la reducción sostenida que el fenómeno del homicidio venía presentando desde el año 2005 en el país, durante el año 2009 se registró un considerable incremento en los homicidios al pasar de 15.250 casos en el 2008 a 17.717 casos en el 2009.

Para el 2009 el principal mecanismo causal de homicidios en el país, tanto para mujeres como para hombres, sigue siendo el proyectil de arma de fuego con un 78,18% equivalente a 13.851 (según el sexo, 12.877 hombres y 949 mujeres).
