During 2005-06, 39 identified offenders used a firearm to commit homicide.

Of these, four used a registered firearm (10%), and five were licensed to own a firearm (13%), reflecting a decrease from the proportion of offenders licensed and registered in 2004-05 (21 percent licensed and 17 percent registered).

[Editor's note: After publishing these percentages from 1997 to 2006, the NHMP annual reports ceased to make comparable figures available. In previous years, the AIC had reported:

2004-05: 21%1
2003-04: 11%2
2002-03: 16%3
2001-02: 10.4%4
1997-98 and 1998-99: 9.4%5]
