WA Has More Guns Than Before Port Arthur Massacre

Auditor-General reports show that before Martin Bryant killed 35 people on April 28, 1996, in the historic Tasmanian town of Port Arthur, WA had 270,371 registered firearms owned by 112,620 licence holders.
In 1999, after the introduction of tougher national gun laws and a buyback scheme, the figure dropped to 259,540 firearms and 85,414 owners.
It continued down to 231,128 firearms in 2004.
The figure has since spiked to 282,853, according to the latest police statistics requested by The Sunday Times.
But fewer people own more guns, with 77,895 licence holders - an average of more than three weapons for each owner…
