This week's Time magazine cover story on "The Secret World of Extreme Militias" sounds an alarm that cannot be ignored. The threat of terrorism is real, but it does not originate with Al Qaeda alone. The danger of homegrown right wing political violence is just as real. The Time article describes, in chilling terms, the proliferation of heavily armed, right wing militias engaged in paramilitary training to resist the perceived "tyranny" of government authority. Time... (GunPolicy.org)

OTTAWA — The NDP has tabled a private member's bill aimed at making the controversial long-gun registry palatable to both rural and urban Canadians. However, it's a long shot that the bill will ever make it through Parliament. New Democrat MP Charlie Angus says he's hoping for support from Liberal and Bloc Quebecois MPs to accelerate the normally lengthy legislative process for private members' bills. But that may not be forthcoming since the Liberals have their... (GunPolicy.org)

As the drama surrounding Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva continued, the Russian-born musician is going into greater detail about the domestic violence she says she suffered at Gibson's hands. Grigorieva, 40, alleges that a livid Gibson, 54, flew off the handle at her on Jan. 6 in the presence of their 1-year-old daughter Lucia and her 13-year-old son Sasha (from a previous relationship with actor Timothy Dalton). Gibson's attorneys declined to comment for this story,... (GunPolicy.org)

In 1994, when Liberal Justice Minister Allan Rock introduced legislation for the long gun registry, I sat a few feet from him in the House of Commons, serving as a member of the Reform Party caucus. Before Question Period one day, I asked him privately for information to assess the merit of the bill. He promised he would provide it to me but never did. Nor was it produced or considered in the public debates the preceded the vote in Parliament that enacted the gun... (GunPolicy.org)

Deseret News (Utah)

SALT LAKE CITY — Gun rights advocates in Utah are pushing a new law that would let residents carry loaded, concealed firearms in public without a permit. In its newsletter this week, the Utah Shooting Sports Council listed the so-called "Constitutional carry" law as one of its top priorities for the 2011 Legislature, which convenes in January. The council says permits are "little more than bureaucratic permission slips" to exercise Second Amendment rights. Rep.... (GunPolicy.org)

Noting that the 'only purpose of a gun is to kill,' Nazire Dedeman, head of the Umut Foundation, an NGO working for individual disarmament, says she cannot understand how Turkish parliamentarians are planning to liberalize the country's gun laws. Laws allowing people as young as 18 to own up to five guns is entirely irresponsible, Dedeman says. A prospective Turkish bill that would lower the minimum age for firearms possession to 18 and make owning a gun easier is... (GunPolicy.org)

Doctors in Finland will be obliged unconditionally to inform the police if an individual seeking treatment from them is unfit to carry a firearm. The present holders of a firearms licence are not to be exempt from this rule, either. The Parliamentary Administration Committee completed on Thursday its report on the Law on Firearms after working on it for a year and a half. Ten of the committee's 17 members own a firearm. The committee's chairman Antti Rantakangas... (GunPolicy.org)

A federal judge has ruled against Nashville's Gun City USA, paving the way for federal firearms regulators to possibly yank its sales license. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tried to revoke the store's firearms sales license in 2008 after multiple repeat violations dating to 1999, mostly dealing with documentation of gun sales and repairs. The store didn't deny the violations but sued to stop the revocation, arguing that the repeat... (GunPolicy.org)

NASHVILLE - A Nashville gun shop could lose its license to sell firearms after a federal judge ruled that the shop willfully violated the Gun Control Act. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in 2008 notified the company of its intent to revoke the license of Gun City, which sells guns and has a gun range on Murfreesboro Road. Gun City filed a lawsuit asking a judge to review the ATF's decision to revoke its license. In a ruling filed Monday, U.S.... (GunPolicy.org)

LYNWOOD, Illinois – The arrest of a small-town police officer for the seemingly random shootings of three people surprised his family and neighbors Friday even as it brought relief to residents on the Illinois-Indiana border where the shootings took place. Brian Dorian, 37, was arrested early Friday after a two-day manhunt for a disheveled gunman who had approached his victims and asked about honey bees or construction material before pulling a gun. One man was... (GunPolicy.org)
