Armed New York Teen Chases Classmate into Police Station, Both Shot

COOPERTOWN, New York - A white schoolboy with a rifle chased a black classmate into a police station near the National Baseball Hall of Fame and shot him, then himself, as the lone officer on duty closed in, authorities said.
The shooter, 16, was hospitalized with a serious wound after shooting himself in the chin, police said Saturday. The other boy, also 16, was hit in the arm. He was treated at a hospital and released.

Gathering on Good Friday to show support for strict gun laws, several hundred protesters assembled outside a Kensington gun shop, urging the owner to sign a "code of conduct" to deter illegal firearms sales.
An attorney for Larry Haney, owner of the Shooter Shop at Allegheny Avenue and Emerald Street, gave reporters a copy of a letter from the District Attorney's Office thanking Haney for his cooperation in combating illegal gun trafficking.

A proposal to let church members arm themselves is another sad commentary on American society and one of the predictable bits of legislation that can distract Louisiana lawmakers from more critical issues.
State Rep. Henry Burns acknowledges his House Bill 68 could be misunderstood, but what is clear is that some houses of worship could become less sanctuary and more fortress. From a public safety standpoint, HB 68 could create more hazard than safety.
