Border officers found 10 illegal handguns and 300 rounds of ammunition hidden inside a vehicle trying to re-enter Canada at a southern Alberta crossing.
Authorities announced the seizure Thursday, saying it was part of an ongoing investigation involving law agencies in Canada and the United States. The horrific shooting of ANC councillor Jimmy Mohlala has again ignited concerns that the 2010 soccer World Cup will be blighted by security problems.
There has been much speculation about a possible political motivation for the killing because Mohlala blew the whistle on alleged corruption in a 2010 construction project last year.
This of, course, must be investigated thoroughly by the police.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina — A South Carolina pawnshop owner accused by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg of recklessly selling a rifle to an ex-convict has pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald says Larry Mickalis pleaded guilty in federal court Friday to failing to keep appropriate firearms sales records. Mickalis was sentenced to two years of probation.

Up to 30 firearms have been stolen in a robbery at a gun shop in Carrick-on-Suir, garda said.
Four men, one of whom was armed, lay in wait for the owner of the licensed firearms dealership to return home with his wife and they were then taken into the house.

LOS ANGELES — A motorist with 30 handguns, seven rifles and fully loaded ammunition magazines in his pickup truck has been arrested at Los Angeles International Airport.
Airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles says the truck was stopped Friday by airport police officers at an entrance to the passenger terminals area.
Castles says the man was arrested for investigation of weapons transportation violations. His name was not immediately released.
