New Zealand First MP Ron Mark is at a loss to understand plans for permanently armed units on the streets of South Auckland. The Police Commissioner will consider a proposed six-month trial of the 24-hour patrols in August. Police say the idea comes from a review of their effectiveness at call-outs where firearms are involved. Officers would be equipped with shotguns, Glock pistols and medium-range Taser stun guns. The suggestion comes less than a week after the... (GunPolicy.org)

The rise in cartel violence in Juárez has made U.S. law enforcement officials all too aware that many of the weapons used for crimes in Mexico come from the United States. Insiders have come to describe illegal gun trafficking from the U.S. to Mexico as the Iron River, a trade route that extends well beyond the border as illegal gun dealers are pulling weapons from U.S. cities "The flow of weapons are going from the United States to Mexico," Tom Crowley, a special... WASHINGTON — One momentous case down, another equally historic decision to go. The Supreme Court returns to the bench Monday with 17 cases still unresolved, including its first-ever comprehensive look at the Second Amendment's right to bear arms. The guns case — including Washington, D.C.'s ban on handguns — is widely expected to be a victory for supporters of gun rights. Awakened before dawn by police officers who battered down the door to his home, Basil Parasiris said he acted in self-defence when he shot at a stranger at his bedroom door. A jury agreed yesterday, acquitting the Montreal-area businessman of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Constable Daniel Tessier, a father of two. The verdict was the latest slap in this case for the Laval police. The trial had revealed that the force's search warrant relied on dubious... (GunPolicy.org)

Firearms may be banned from the hands of "severely mentally ill" individuals if legislation proposed Thursday by Attorney General Roy Cooper is approved. Cooper presented the bill, Senate Bill 2081, Thursday morning to N.C. Senate Judiciary I committee members. It directs clerks of court to enter information from involuntary commitments into a national database designed to prevent the severely mentally ill from acquiring guns. The proposal stems from Cooper's campus... (GunPolicy.org)

Who dies in greater numbers from firearms, police in the line of duty or preschoolers? The answer — contained in a searing new report by the Children's Defense Fund — is surprising and disturbing. In 2005, the most recent year for which data are available, guns killed 69 preschoolers, compared with 53 law enforcement officers. That's just one of the alarming facts in the Washington-based child advocacy group's "Protect Children, Not Guns" report. Among the... (GunPolicy.org)
