Gun suicide and homicide rates were about 25% lower when background checks on gun buyers were performed by local authorities as opposed to federal or state agencies, according to a study by the Medical College of Wisconsin. The study shows a patchwork of background check practices around the country. A study released last month showed that one out of every four guns seized by Milwaukee police during an arrest came out of Badger Guns, which formerly was known as Badger Outdoors, in West Milwaukee. No other dealer accounted for more than 3% of the sales of such guns, according to the study by Steven Brandl of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
