VIENTIANE, Laos — A thousand Thai teachers want guns to protect themselves from Muslim militants, the Bangkok Post reported during the weekend. About 1,000 teachers in the Yala region of southern Thailand have already "applied for permission to buy and carry firearms to protect themselves" from insurgents, the newspaper said. PRETORIA — In an effort to rid the Western Cape of hoards of firearms, the South African Police Services (SAPS) there have destroyed over 800 firearms. The destruction of these firearms took place at the National Scrap Metals in Kuils River, Cape Town, yesterday (Saturday), under the supervision of the SAPS.
