According to his family, Robert Johns did not mean to shoot his best friend who then died laying in his arms inside a county church. Johns, 23, was in circuit court Monday and was formally charged with manslaughter in the death of Robert Mack, 21, his best friend for several years, according to his family. NEW HAVEN — A 9-year-old boy died early Monday after he was shot in the abdomen while a young man was showing him a gun in a New Haven apartment, police said. Edgar Ayala of New Haven was shot about 2:30 a.m. and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died. SACRAMENTO — A bill banning the sale or free distribution of trigger locks not approved by the state Department of Justice was sent to Gov. Gray Davis Monday. The state Senate, voting 25-12, agreed to changes in the bill approved by the Assembly on Aug. 15. LOUIS — A handgun that a mentally ill man used to kill his brother had been carelessly stored by their father, a jury ruled in ordering the father to pay $400,000 in damages to the victim's widow and daughter.
