Scramble's on to Get Guns Licensed
29 December 2000
Montreal Gazette (Quebec)
Three days before the deadline for owners of firearms to apply for a license, Rudy Ventidelli is stockpiling ammunition against federal gun-control legislation.
"It's a disaster for my business," said the owner of Dante Inc., which sells firearms and — "thank God" — specialized cookware.
"It has created so much paperwork and made it so complicated to own a firearm, people are getting rid of them and not buying any more," he said.
Ventidelli said every day he... (GunPolicy.org)

To curb gun violence, officials Thursday melted 2,220 handguns and other firearms collected by the Los Angeles Police Department.
TAMCO Steel melted the weapons in a furnace at its steel mill in Rancho Cucamonga, recycling them into steel bars to be used during construction of the Alameda Corridor Project, a transportation system that will run from the harbor area to downtown Los Angeles.
The LAPD collects an average of 8,000 guns a year, mostly weapons that are... (GunPolicy.org)
Some Gun Shipments to Maryland Are Halted
29 December 2000
Washington Post
The makers of several popular handguns have halted shipments to Maryland in reaction to a first-in-the-nation safety law that requires manufacturers to create a "ballistic fingerprint" for every handgun sold in the state.
Glock, Browning and a handful of other gunmakers say they are withholding gun shipments while they try to comply with the new law, which was passed this year and hailed as a major political victory for Maryland Gov. Parris N. Glendening (D).

Realistic Solutions to Gun Violence
29 December 2000
Boston Globe, Editorial
It is usually right after a mass shooting tragedy, such as the one that occurred in Wakefield Tuesday, that the questions begin. They start with "what if" and "suppose we," then quickly venture into absurdity.
What if we allowed everyone to carry hidden handguns to protect themselves? Well, all this would do is allow more people to shoot each other randomly when they arrive disgruntled at work or lose a fight over a parking space at the mall.
The proponents of... (GunPolicy.org)

On Tuesday, Massachusetts law-enforcement officials say, 42-year-old Michael McDermott ambled through a Boston Internet firm on a five- to eight-minute shooting spree that left seven people dead. Then he quietly returned to a reception area, still fully armed, and sat down next to two of his victims, where authorities found him.
In the face of such ghastly and bizarre behavior, some might hesitate before rushing into the public arena to propose solutions to such... (GunPolicy.org)

San Jose Mercury News (California)
As a Sunday deadline for Californians to register their assault weapons fast approaches, gun organizations threatened to go to court to challenge it, saying the regulations drafted by the state attorney general are vague and do not give gun owners enough time to comply.
From the South Bay to the East Bay, police departments agreed Thursday there could be some confusion, saying they'd been fielding numerous questions from gun owners about the deadline and the... (GunPolicy.org)
7 Shot Dead in Philly Crack House
29 December 2000
Associated Press
PHILADELPHIA — Four masked intruders burst into a dilapidated crack house and opened fire on 10 people, killing seven, police said.
The victims were found lined up in the dining room of the ramshackle home, each with multiple gunshot wounds, police Capt. James Brady said Friday.
"We know that a robbery occurred inside, but it would seem to me that you don't slaughter 10 people for a few bucks," Brady told reporters. "I think there's a deeper motive involved than a... (GunPolicy.org)
Project Melts Guns, But Not Memories
29 December 2000
Los Angeles Times
RANCHO CUCAMONGA — When Project Isaiah convened again Thursday morning at Tamco Steel, there were many memories to share.
Evan Leigh Foster, 7, had dressed himself in his Batman outfit on Dec. 8, 1997, and gone to Darby Park in Inglewood with his mother, Rhonda, and 10-month-old brother, Alec. They were going to pick up Evan's soccer trophy, register for the park's winter basketball league, then head off to a school fund-raiser at a pizza parlor.
In the parking lot,... (GunPolicy.org)
