Hundreds Protest Against Gun-Related Crimes

More than 500 people marched to the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Centre in Sebokeng on the Vaal Rand on Saturday in protest against gun-related crimes in the area, SABC radio news reported.
The march is part of a national campaign aimed at supporting the Gun Control Bill.
Addressing demonstrators, Gun Free South Africa's director Adele Kirsten said more than 800 South African children were killed in gun-related incidents since 1998.

'Straw Purchase' Gun Bill Survives Senate Committee

Legislation to crack down on adults who make "straw purchases" of guns for children or for felons had a close call Friday, but the bill survived.
The legislation, among nearly a half-dozen measures sought by Gov. Bill Owens this year, emerged from the Senate Appropriations Committee on a 5-4 vote.

Gore Urges Ban on Guns in Churches

SAN JOSE, California — Al Gore called for a ban on guns in churches and other places of worship Friday, taking a poke at Republican presidential rival George W. Bush's Texas version of the idea.
"We should ban guns from our churches and school events — something that is shamefully legal in George Bush's Texas and in 20 other states," Gore told a group of young people. "Our children can't reach for their dreams if they're ducking for cover."
