The first in a groundbreaking series of gun shop prosecutions that gained nationwide attention fizzled Friday when jurors deadlocked and a federal judge declared a mistrial.
Jurors said they reached "a permanent impasse" over the only remaining count in what had originally been a six-count indictment against Universal Firearms Ltd., which operates Bell's Gun and Sport Shop in Franklin Park, and one of its sales clerks.

Hundreds of firearm owners in the Orana-central west area will soon have their gun licenses cancelled for failing to comply with legislation, the Orana Hunting Club warned yesterday.
"A large number of gun owners who joined clubs to obtain firearm licences under new laws have failed to comply with the Act," said Orana Hunting Club secretary Robyn Bourke.
"This requires members to attend two club events every 12 months," Ms Bourke said.

Gun Maker Wants No Gun Shows Sales

DENVER — The nation's largest gun manufacturer has begun instructing distributors not to sell its firearms at gun shows, apparently the first policy of its kind, The Denver Post reported Saturday.
In contracts with distributors this year, Sturm, Ruger & Co. states that its shotguns, rifles and handguns be supplied only "to federally licensed firearms dealers selling exclusively from their regular place of business," the newspaper said.
