French Hunters Are Under the Gun as New Year Starts

PARIS — France's hunters, who have held sway over the countryside since the Revolution in 1789, face a bleak New Year with the European Union and the Environment Ministry turning their guns on them.
Having fought off a half-hearted government attempt to curtail their season, they were caught off guard by Brussels which two weeks ago invoked European law and demanded that they shorten the season for shooting migrating birds by a month.
