Up to one million illegal and unregistered firearms could still be hidden in Victorian homes despite the guns buy back scheme and a new amnesty.
Murders by firearms have actually increased since the buyback scheme which removed 225,000 registered and unregistered firearms from circulation.
There were 18 shooting murders in 1996-97, after the buyback scheme had been introduced compared with only six in 1995-1996 before the scheme started.

Study: Past Misdemeanours Predict Future Crime Risk of Handgun

CHICAGO — Laws barring felons from buying guns should be expanded to ban prospective buyers who have committed misdemeanors, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Researchers found that handgun purchasers with a prior misdemeanor conviction were nearly five times as likely as gun buyers without a criminal record to be charged with new offenses involving firearms or violence.

WEST HOLLYWOOD — The City of West Hollywood is celebrating a win at the California Supreme Court. The panel refused to hear an appeal of a city law banning the sale of "Saturday Night Specials."
The National Rifle Association was contesting a ruling by the Second District Court of Appeal. That court said, state law bars cities and counties from setting their own registration or licensing requirements for guns … But not from regulating gun sales.
