Illegal Firearms Owners Could Number Up to 90,000

WELLINGTON — Up to 90,000 people nationally could illegally own firearms, police say.
Wellington firearms officer Jim O'Leary said these were people who had either refused to reapply for firearms licences or to forfeit their guns. Police were trying to track down these people.
Following a law change in 1992, police sent letters to the last known addresses of licence holders telling them they had until July 1997 to renew their licences.
