Bid to Tighten California Auto Gun Law Fails

SACRAMENTO, California — An attempt to strengthen California's nine-year-old ban on military-style assault weapons by changing the law's focus failed by a single vote Monday in the state Assembly.
Democratic Assemblyman Don Perata's bill would have replaced the current assault weapons law, which bans certain specific models, with a more sweeping generic description based on a gun's features and firepower.
