Special Interest Groups Try to 'Stop Ashcroft'

WASHINGTON — A coalition of mostly liberal special-interest groups announced what they called the biggest drive ever against a Cabinet-level nominee, conservative Attorney General-designate John Ashcroft.
Leaders from more than 200 groups-representing women, labor, minorities, gays and environmentalists-said their "Stop Ashcroft" campaign will feature newspaper ads, rallies and visits to the offices of individual U.S. senators.
