Manila Tightens Gun Controls to Fight Crime
25 January 2003
New Straits Times (Malaysia)
MANILA — The government is imposing stiffer gun controls amid a big jump in the crime rate.
But anti-crime advocates believe the move will hardly make any difference until some 328,000 unlicensed firearms are accounted for.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose Lina suspended the issue of gun licences and permits which enabled private individuals to carry firearms.
The suspension is to last for a fortnight initially, but could be extended.
