Judges Force Retreat on Sentences

David Blunkett last night watered down plans to impose a mandatory five-year jail sentences on anyone carrying a gun illegally after being threatened with a revolt by judges. The Home Secretary is now preparing to give judges the discretion to give more lenient sentences in exceptional circumstances.
