Katikati police have warned Bay of Plenty avocado growers to think twice before taking the law into their own hands by arming themselves against fruit rustlers. Growers in the Athenree area have lost the equivalent of around 2500 trays of export avocados to thieves in recent weeks — about $60,000 worth.
