In April 1996, a slightly slow-witted Tasmanian named Martin Bryant picked up a gym bag of assault rifles and went on a killing spree in the Australian tourist town of Port Arthur. He murdered 35 men, women and children, grinning like an idiot all the while. That same year, in March, a disgraced former scout-master named Thomas Hamilton shot dead 16 small children and a teacher in a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland, before turning the gun on himself.
