"British lawmaker Jo Cox has died after shooting attack in her constituency," it said in the usual dry language of such alerts.
And I felt my heart thumping.
How could this have happened in the land of my birth and upbringing? How could the American scourge of gun violence that had just killed 49 innocents in Orlando – and, to be honest, to which I have become almost numb – have spread there?
