Mainlanders are twice as likely to own a firearm than North Islanders. About 8 per cent of South Islanders are standard firearm licence holders, compared to just 4 per cent in the North Island, according to police data. About one in 10 people have a firearm licence in the Tasman police district, an area that runs from Kaikoura, around the top of the South Island and down the West Coast to Haast.
