A report by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) has found 1,570 firearms were stolen in 620 incidents in 2008-09.
The National Firearm Theft Monitoring Report said only three per cent of these guns were used to commit an offence, or were stolen by someone charged with a serious criminal offence.
The most commonly stolen firearms were rifles, followed by shotguns.
