SPRINGFIELD, Oregon — There is no evidence that the mother of a 5-year-old boy who accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old brother knew her son could open a locked gun safe, police say.
The 5-year-old boy was supposed to be taking a nap in his mother's bedroom Sunday, but instead found the gun safe key stored in a box there.
"She didn't think the kid knew where it was, but she was wrong," Springfield police Sgt. John King said Wednesday.
