Armed gendarmes were on standby to fly to one of France's remotest colonies yesterday as a feud between two tribal leaders threatened to erupt into violence.
Wallis and Futuna, one of the world's smallest territories, consists of just two inhabited islands lying north of Fiji in the South Pacific.
Its 14,000 people are governed by a French prefect appointed by Paris, with advice from three royal families, one from Wallis and two from Futuna.
