Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern is considering an outright ban on handguns, The Sunday Business Post has learned. Private handgun ownership in Ireland has skyrocketed from zero to 1,700 in the past five years, after firearm lobbyists exposed the lack of legislative prohibition available to Garda licensing authorities, in a series of High Court actions.
